Divorce brings us one of the biggest changes in our lives. Divorce shakes the foundations of life for the worst and from this rubble we need to build a new beginning. Reorganising everyday life, dividing common property and arranging and organising shared parenting can be challenging for a long time. Not only the partner will be left behind, but also some friendships can fall apart. This often happens, especially with mutual friends. In the midst of all the changes, it is difficult to give yourself time to work through the separation. Thoughts often spiral into a cycle of anger, resentment and bitterness. The person who was once the most important person for me no longer belongs to my life. Why?

“Participation in the separation group is certainly worthwhile for everyone. Certainly, it also requires a lot of work and introspection. There was a deep trust and good atmosphere in the group. I got peer support, more understanding and new tools to deal with the past and the future. As the seminar progressed, I rediscovered new lightness in my life. Now I can look optimistically into the future.”

The divorce process takes a lot out of us. It is important to give oneself time to grieve the sadness triggered by the break-up and to release the anger and resentment that it has stirred up. Friends, whether or not they have experienced the break-up themselves, often do not have the time and patience to give you the support you need. In addition, well-meaning advices from friends to get active in finding a new partner can feel distressing. A divorce group gives you space to work through all your feelings and thoughts about the divorce.

As the meetings of the online divorce regovery group take place in Zoom, you can participate no matter where you live. All you need is an internet connection on your own device.

Divorce recovery group – a journey to yourself

Coping with a breakup could be seen as a journey where you learn a lot about yourself. Working through the emotions associated with separation will undoubtedly lead to a better sense of self-worth and self-esteem. On this journey, you will find invaluable peer support from others who are facing the same issues.

Divorce recovery support group – a safe place to heal

This divorce recovery support group is not a Finnish Divorce Seminar (Suomalainen eroseminaari). While the Finnish Divorce Seminar is strongly based on the method developed by Bruce Fisher, Eosita’s divorce recovery group uses not only the Fisher method but also the counsellor’s many years of comprehensive experience in counselling, both with individuals and couples.

The divorce recovery group addresses, among other things, the feelings and events associated with divorce, discusses the structures that led to the divorce, and considers the growth story associated with the divorce. During and after the divorce, it is important to give sufficient space to the feelings associated with the divorce. Every divorce is surely associated with anger, grief and fear, but also with loneliness and disappointment. It is important to understand and recognise where these feelings come from so that you can process them. These feelings are processed during the group meetings through discussions and various exercises. The divorce recovery group offers you a safe space to process your separation, regardless of your relationship background.

Topics covered in the meetings include:

  • The relationship I broke up with
  • My way of acting
  • Anger – can anger be expressed constructively?
  • Grief, a heavy burden
  • I am OK!
  • My needs and desires
  • Infidelity in the relationship
  • Children and childlessness
  • I am lovable

The divorce recovery group’s working model offers understanding of one’s own way of acting and thinking. Recognising and becoming aware of these things will certainly help you in many different situations in your life.

“Although each participant in the group had a different starting point, the group united our experiences. The group had an open and confidential atmosphere. Discussions, book and homework, suitably varied. There were enough seminar sessions to be able to see your own and others’ progress.”

Anyone who has experienced a breakup or is considering one can participate in the breakup group. The group is open to heterosexual, same-sex and polyamorous individuals who have divorced. Participants may have recently divorced, or the breakup may have happened 10 years ago, while other participants are still considering a breakup. All these phases are linked by the need to deal with questions surrounding the break-up and to better understand one’s own behaviour and needs. The break-up process is an individual experience, but every break-up and the process of coming to terms with it is also an opportunity for a new, better beginning.
